DESCRIPTION

For strong, long wearing contacts, at minimum cost, General Plate offers Top-lay, in strip form or as fab ricated parts. Top-lay is produced by permanently bonding one or more strips of precious contact metal to a base metal, to pr,;,vide elevated contact surfaces. After bonding, the Top-lay is cold worked by profile rolling to harden the precious metal and the base metal to the required temper. The contact surface may be rolled with a cylindrical radius if required. Typical Top-lay strip and parts are illustrated in Figure 1. ADVANTAGES OF TOP-LAY The cost of Top-lay contacts Lower Costs -

metal section . Normally a 20-30 % reduction, on both the contact metal and the base metal, is sufficient to obtain the maximum advantages from cold working. However, Top-lay can be produced within a wide hardness range, to meet the specific requirements of any application. Because Top-lay is produced to customer's exact specifications, the profile rolls are produced in our own tool room to insure exact compliance with dimensional and surface finish requirements. SIZES

Top-lay is normally produced in widths varying from less than ½" to 4 ½ ", and in thickness from .022" to .250". The contact material should be at least .008" thick and the base metal should be at least .010" thick. These dimensions do not represent abso lute limits. We will be pleased to review any requirements for production as Top-lay.

DESIGN REQUIREMENTS When Top-lay is specified for contacts, it is advan tageous to consider shapes which will generate a minimum amount of scrap in blanking and to allow efficient nesting on the strip . Protruding tabs should be eliminated and designed around wherever pos sible. If possible, assemblies having a single con tact area should be designed so that double-width strip can be used with pieces blanked from each edge of the strip. Severe bends immediately adjac ent to the elevated contact surface should be avo ided in order that the base metal will have sufficient space to stretch into the required shape . Forms and bends should be designed keeping in mind that they may be made crossgrain .
