TWO TEXAS INSTRUME NTS SUBSIDIAR IES BECOME DIVISIONS

DALLAS, Jan. 1- -(Special)- -Through an organizatio nal change, two wholly-own ed subsidiarie s become operating divisions effective immediatel y, it was announced today by J.E. Jonsson, president of Texas Instrument s Incorporate d. Houston Technical Laboratori es, geophysica l and industrial instrument manufactur er located in Houston, has become the Industrial Instrument ation division and Wm. I. Mann Co., precision optics manufactur er located in Monrovia, California, has become the Optics division. Texas Instrument s acquired Houston Technical Laboratori es in 1953 and centralized in it the design, manufactur e and marketing of all TI geophysica l and industrial instrument s.

The Industrial Instrument ation division will remain in its new plant

in Houston, headed by Robert W. Olson as Texas Instrument s vice president in charge of the division. Texas Instrument s acquired the Wm. I. Mann Co. in 1956 and centralized in it the design, manufactur e and marketing of all TI optical component s, making it the largest precision optics manufactur er west of the Mississipp i.

The TI Optics

division will remain in California, headed by William I. Mann as division manager. · Mr. Jonsson stated that the purpose of the change was to simplify the TI corporate structure and to increase efficiency of the manufactur ing divisions.

All

Texas Instrument s manufactur ing operations are now carried on by divisions; the two. mentioned and the Apparatus and Semicondu ctor-Compo nents divisions in Dallas. Other major TI operations are carried on by subsidiarie s Geophysica l Service Inc, and its worldwide affiliates, Engineerin g Supply Company and Continental Rubber Company of New York.

ENGINEERING SUPPLY COMPANY NAMES VANVRANKEN NEW SALES MANAGER DALLAS, Jan. 2--(Special)--Appointment of Leonard J. Van Vranken as sales manager was announced today by G. W. Levering, Jr., president of Engineering Supply Company.

ESCO distributes industrial, electronic,

geophysical, power transmission, and safety supplies throughout the South­ west, representing some 500 manufacturers.

Engineering Supply Company

is a subsidiary of Texas Instruments Incorporated, publicly-owned electronics and geophysics firm. Mr. Van Vranken previously was Southwest division district manager for the Lewyt Corporation.

Before that he had been with General Electric

Company and later the General Electric Supply Company for 18 years, for two years as sales manager for small appliances in the Southwest. Mr. Van Vranken is married, has two children and makes his home in· Dallas.

John E. Woodward has been named Manager of Marketing of the General Plate Division of Metals & Controls Corporation of Attleboro, Massachusetts, it ~~s announced by Carroll L. Wilson, President.

Jerome Ottmar, who

formerly filled this function, has been named General Manager of the Nuclear Products Division of Metals & Controls. In this capacity, Mr. Woodward will have charge of all marketing for General Plate Division including management of sales, together with general matters of product selection, pricing, inventory control, and distribution. Mr. Woodward came to M&C in 1946 and 1"0rked in the Time Study and Methods Department until 1948 when he was transferred to the General Plate Sales and Engineering Department.

In 19.53, he became Product Manager of Industrial

Metals in the General Plate Division. He received his AB degree from Bowdoin College in 1941 and an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1943.

Before coming to M&C he was on active duty

in the Naval Reserve from 1943 to 1946 as a Lieutenant. In 1948, Mr. Woodw.rrd married the former Jayne Jewett of Newtonville, Massachusetts and they have two boys. Mr. Woodward and his family make their home in Taunton, Massachusetts.

NEW TWO CHANNEL RECTILINE AR RECORDER ANNOUNC ED BY TEXAS INSTRUME NTS Two fun c tions can be monitored simultaneo usly in their true wave forms with the new rectilinear writing galvanome tric strip chart recorder announced by the Industrial Instrument ation division of Texas Instrument s Incorporate d.

The DUAL recti/riter uses a single chart drive and records

the two variables on a two channel rectilinear chart with a common time base. The DUAL recti/riter has high deflection sensitivity and is adaptable to a variety of circuits.

As the instrument has galvanome ter

meter movements , it is ec_o nomical and highly reliable, with no warm-up time or drift problems. Functional design features which make the DUAL recti/riter highly convenient are a "writing desk" area for manual notations on the chart, front-locat ed zero adjust, front-moun ted controls and signal terminals, and finger tip 10-speed gear shift chart drive.

Event marker pens can be

mounted on each side of the chart. The DUAL recti/riter (developed from the field-prove n single pen recti/ riter announced in March, 1956) incorporate s two com_plete galvanometric recording systems enclosed in a single portable case. (more)

DALLAS, Jan. l 0- -(Special)- -A fifty percent 1·e duction in the quantity price of the industry's first very high frequency transistor was announced today by Texas Instrument s Incorporate d, the nation's largest commercia l producer of transistors .

Vice President Mark Shepherd, Jr. stated that this reduction--

immediate! y effective - -is the result of improved production techniques and will further broaden the range of commercia l application s for the device. With an oscillatin g frequency more than 250 megacycles , this transistor, introduced last March and made possible by the TI-develop ed "grown-dif fused" production technique, was the first commercia l semiconduc tor device with an operating frequency comparable to a VHF vacuum tube.

It has made possible

transistoriz ation of TV, FM, and VHF receivers - -and transistori zed amplifiers, oscillators , or switching application s in communica tions, telemeterin g, or radar.

DALLAS, Jan. 21--(Speci al)--Radio transistor kit quantity prices are reduced up to 14 percent--ef fective immediate ly--accordi ng to an announcem ent made today by Texas Instrument s Incorporate d. These germanium kits include all the transistors r ·eq.uired to build tubeless radio receivers. This is the third significant price reduction made during January of 1957 by TI, the nation's largest transistor · manufactur er.

The first reduction

cut the quantity price of the industry's first Very High Frequency germanium transistor 50 percent, , and the second reduction lowered the quantity price of the firm's line of high temperatur e silicon transistors and rectifiers up to 10 percent. Texas Instrument s developed and produced in commercia l quantities the industry's first low-cost high-gain radio-frequ ency germanium transistors in early 1954--whic h made possible the first transistori zed consumer product, the miniature trari.s1.stor. portable radio,

Tl's germanium radio

transistors are now used in the majority of the transistori zed receivers on the market.

DALLAS, Feb. 3--(Special)--A new TI Semiconductor -Components marketing office has been opened i n Ottawa according to an announcement made today by Te x as Instruments Inco r po r ated • . Vice President Mark Shepherd, Jr. stated that this new office w ill even better enable TI to supply precision electronic devices to the rapidly expanding Canadian electronics market. Texas Instruments, a 26-year old electronics and geophysics firm, is the largest commercial manufacturer of both germanium and silicon transistors, the tiny, low -pow er consuming substitutes for va c uum tubes.

TI is also a lead-

ing producer of silicon rectifiers and diodes, film resistors, precision meters, and custom- built transformer-ty pe products.

All of these electronic components

will be marketed by the ne w office--located at 53 Queen Street, Ottawa 4, Canada. The telephone numbe :r is CEntral 6-3430. Until recently, Texas Instruments marketed its line of precision electronic components through a Canadian representative , how ever, all · products of the Semiconductor -Components division w ill now be supplied directly to Canada by TI marketing personnel operating from the new Ottaw a office.

MARINE GENERAL JOINS TEXAS INSTRUMENTS APPARATUS DIVISION

DALLAS, Feb. 11 .- -(Special)- -Marine Brigadier General Max J. Volcansek, Jr., 42, has joined Texas Instruments Incorporated in the Apparatus di vis ion Engineer in g department, Vice President Walter F. Joyce announced today.

He is the holder

of three of the top service awards for valor. Gen. Volcanseic joined the Marine Corps as an enlisted man 20 years ago, became a Marine fi ghte 1· pilot in World War II, and commanded fighter squadrons attacking Bougainville and Rabaul.

He was commanding officer of Marine Air

Group 13, Kaneohe Bay, T. H. He received a B. A. degree in mathematics from Macalester College, Minnesota, and also is a graduate of the Senior School of the Marine Corps.

In his new position, he will be Head of the Administrative branch in the Apparatus division Engineering department where he will be responsible for all plannin g of an administrative nature. largest commercial transistor manufacturer - -will make its technical knowledge and manufacturing facilities available to its U . K. subsidiary and will assist it in getting into production. TI pioneered commercial production of silicon high temperature transistors and germanium radio transistors. Managing Director Dudley Saward was born in 1913 at Mill Hill, Middlesex and studied at Bishops Stortford College, Hertfordshire, the Royal Air Force College , Cranwell , and the R. A . F. Electrical Wireless School, Cranwell.

He served as a pilot in the U . K. and India pre-war and for

15 months during the war.

Mr. Saward became Group Captain and Chief

Radar Officer to the Commander -in-Chief, Bomber Command and was awarded the O. B . E . for the development and application of radar navigational and blind bombing devices. Following the war he was Controller of navigation and telecommunications for the British European Airways and a director of International Aeradio.

From 1948 to 1956 Mr. Saward was a director with the confec-

tionery firms of Barratt & Co., Ltd., England, and Barratt Paynes, Ltd. , Australia.

DALLAS, Feb. 26--(Special)--At ceremonies today highlighted by conversion of the sun's energy into electricity detonating dynamite to break ground,

Texas Instruments Incorporated officially started construction of its new 280, 000 sq ft, four million dollar plant for the Semiconductor -Components division. The newest TI building will be located in Dallas northeast of the North Central Expressway-Valley View Road intersection near Richardson.

The

Semiconductor-Comp onents division, employing about 1500 people, will begin the move to its new Dallas plant this f.,ll.

The Apparatus division will

then expand into the space vacated in the main D a llas plant at 6000 Lemmon avenue. The new Texas Instruments plant--as proper for a scientific company that has grown twenty-fold in ten years--will incorporate the very latest design and construction principles.

It will represent the first U.S. industrial appli-

cation of hyperbolic paraboloid thin-shell pre-stressed concrete construction. '

The thin-shell ceilings (somewhat s -hnilar to an "inside-out" umbrella) will give occupants a feeling of spaciousness and calm because of their great span and sound-diffusing ability. The building will have two floors with a seven-foot between-floor area for

all utilities and mechanical services.

be served through the floor, eliminating the usual ceiling clutter. (more)

The between-floor utility area utilizes pre-cast

concrete three -dimensional space frame members.

These and other advanced design .and construction features will result in a functionally attractive, livable, rapidly constructed, easily expanded building.

It will consist initially of 37 63-ft square units joined in a rec-

tangle with central patios and other variations such as landscaped external patios and entrance ways.

fields I At today's groundbreaking, Tl Board Chairman Eugene McDermott and TI President J.E. Jonsson operated the TI-built "electronic ground breaker." Construction of the four million dollar building began immediate! y under the direction of Robert E. McKee General Contractor, Inc.

Completion and

occupancy of various sections is scheduled to begin October 19 and extend until April 19, 1958. The McKee firm has built many Dallas landmarks, including the Parkland Memorial hospital, Fo°'dren Science building, Dallas Public library, and Statler -Hilton hotel.

Major subcontractors .include the Beard Plumbing Co.,

Harman Electrical Construction Co., and Grinnell Co., Inc. Building architects were O'Neil Ford and Richard Colley, who also designed Tl s recently opened Houston plant, which applied some of these advanced design features.

One especially significant feature of the new building will be a 60, 000 sq ft "ultra air conditioned" area to contain critical productionprocesses.

TI Vice President Mark Shepherd, Jr. stated

that three grades of silicon semiconductor grade material- -Research, Premium, and Standard--will be marketed through the firm's Semiconductor Components division to other :-manufacturers requiring the use of silicon in their production processes. Texas Instruments Research grade silicon has a resistivity rating greater than 200 ohm-centimete rs with less than one impurity per billion parts--the highest resistivity and purity on the market today. crystals are grown from each 1. 5 to 2 pound lot.

Two test

Both crystals must be

pure P-type material in the region between the top 10 and 60 percent points of each crystal.

The minimum resistivity for each crystal in this test

region must be greater than 200 ohm-centimete rs.

Premium grade silicon, P-type material with a minimum resistivity of 100 ohm-centimeters, will be used in the production of silicon high frequency transistors, high voltage rectifiers, and infrared optical components. TI Standard grade silicon has a minimum resistivity rating of 10 ohm-centimeters and will be used in the manufacture of silicon small signal transistors, low-voltage rectifiers and diodes, and solar converters. One test crystal is grown and tested from each lot of Premium and Standard grades to check the resistivity ratings.

In all three grades,

a bar cut from the grown test crystal is checked at tenth inch intervals by a two-point probe method.

Current is passed through the bar and the

voltage drop between the two probes is measured in order to determine the resistivity rating. Because silicon semiconductor products ope rate stably to 150° C, they are ideally suited for military applications where high temperature operation is vital.

TI has extensive experience with silicon since this

same material is used in the production of its own line of silicon devices. This material is now made available to other semiconductor manufacturers.

DALLAS, March 11- -(Special)- -Texas Instruments Incor!)Orated today announced that it has begun the commercial production and sale of high _purity silicon, a basic ingredient of transistors, r ectifiers and diodes, solar convertors, and other semiconductor products.

This is Tl's first effort in furnishing raw materials

for the rapidly expanding electronics industry. Texas Instruments }:ieretofore has concentrated on the manufacture of electronic components, military apparatus and industrial instruments and geophysical exploration.

It is the world's largest commercial manufacturer

of transistors and has an especial lead in silicon semiconductor devices. TI research activities in connection with silicon electronic components led to an improved basic material and its commercial availability. Silicon is the earth's second most common element and is the principal element in common sand. TI produces silicon by a chemical process to fantastically high purities measured in impurity parts per billion--where it acquires semiconductor properties - -and sells it for $320 to $980 a pound. The high purity silicon material now made available to the commercial market is the same as Texas Instruments has been manufacturing for its own semiconductor products.

It will be supplied in l ½ to 2 pound lots;

TEXAS INSTRUMENTS SALES RISE 59% OVER PREVIOUS YEAR Last year's sales of $45,699,358 were the highest in Texas Instruments 26-year history and 59% higher than previous -record 1955, according to the 1956 Annual Report issued today. After-tax earnings of $2,349, 103 also set a new record and net income per share of common stock was up 44% from 50f to 72f for the publicly-owned electronics and geophysics firm. TI President J.E. Jonsson in the Annual Report predicted 1957 sales may reach $65 million.

He estimated 1957 after-tax earnings at

about a dollar per share. In 1956, TI continued to lead the rapidly expanding transistor industry and is the largest manufacturer of the tiny, durable electronic amplifiers--measured by either units or dollar volume.

Military sales--

principally Apparatus division--increased 45% to $12,850,247, 28% of total.

Geophysical Service Inc. petroleum exploration sales also rose

to a new high level, reaching 66 seismic and gravity-magnetomete r crews in 19 countries, 6 interpretive offices and a core drill crew. Texas Instruments acquired the Wm. I. Mann Company of Los Angeles in 1956 and combined in it all optics operations; making it the largest precision optics producer west of the Mississippi. (more)

All manufacturing divisions now operate under

occupancy in late 1957 when the Lemmon avenue plant will be used principally for the Apparatus division.

According to all naval records and nautical lore, the first

fully transistorized radio-controlle d tugboat will be put afloat by the State of Texas at the great annual IRE Show in New York this week (Booths 2816, 2818, and 2820).

This miniature version of the mighty tugs in the New York

harbors, is controlled by a transmitter utilizing four TI germanium transistors. This transmitter sends a radio frequency signal to a crew on the tugboat consisting of seven Texas Instruments transistors .•• effectively demonstrating the principle of transistor operation at 27. 255 megacycles. NEW GROWN-DIFFU SED REFLEX TRANSISTOR.

The first successfully

designed high gain germanium semiconductor transistor is announced and displayed by Texas Instruments Incorporated in the firm's show booths. The use of this transistor (2N310) in miniaturized radio receivers completely eliminates the need for a separate audio driver transistor.

TEXAS INSTRUMENTS APPOINT S PUBLIC RELATIONS MANAGER DALLAS, March 30- -(Special)- -Appointment of Don Maciver as Public Relations Manager of Texas Instruments Incorporated was announced today by Marketing Vice President S. T. Harris. A veteran former newspaperman, Mr. Maciver comes to TI from the Missoui-Kansas-Texas Railroad where he was Assistant Director of Public Relations for three and one-half years.

He previously served

16 years on The Dallas Morning News staff, 10 years as business and financial editor. Mr. Maciver is a native of Superior, Wisconsin. He worked on va:rious newspapers in the Middle West and East while attending school and was managing editor of a daily paper in Minnesota before coming to Dallas in 1937. He moved to St. Louis, Mo., in 1953 to accept his position with the M-K-T. A founder of the Press Club of Dallas, Mr. Maclver also was active in the Dallas chapter, Society for Advancement of Management, serving three terms on the board of directors.

He is a member of the Public

Relations Society of America. At Texas Instruments, international electronics and geophysics firm, Mr. Maclver will direct operations of an expanded program of public relations with immediate emphasis upon the company's community and press relations. (more)

1957 MILITARY TRAINING WITH INDUSTRY PROGRAM TO BEGIN AT TEXAS INSTRUMENTS DALLAS, April 15--(Special)--Six U.S. Signal Su_pply Agency and one U.S. Air Force representatives will arrive at Texas Instruments Incorporated Monday for three weeks of study into tne advanced management practices of a leading supplier of military electronic systems. This will be the second team in as many years to study at Texas Instruments under the Signal Supply Agency's Training witn Industry Program. The program has a three-fold purpose of broadening individual perspective of those involved, improving governmental efficiency through adaption from industry, and fostering better understanding and cooperation between government and industry.

With survival in military operations dependent on efficient production and distribution of equipment from industry to the armed services, the Signal Corps instituted its program to help solve the human problems involved. Team members, from as far as the West Coast and as near as Fort Worth, will have the dual mission of studying industry's procedures and problems and of informing their counterparts in industry of current trends in military procurement.

latest advances as practiced at Texas Instruments Incorporated. During a 2-day seminar at Tl's home office and manufacturing plant, the educators saw TI-built machines grow germanium and silicon cr:ystals larger and purer than nature 1 s diamonds. Germanium and silicon are the basic materials used in making semi.conductor devices, including the tiny transistor of which Texas Instruments is one of the world's largest producers. They also saw military electronic equipment being manufactured in Tl's Apparatus division and heard about the company's operations in Houston where precision geophysical exploration and industrial data handling equipment is made at the Industrial Instrumentatio n division; and at Los Angeles where the Optics division manufactures precision optical components.

They visited engineering and research depart-

TEXAS INSTRUMENTS PRESIDENT REPORTS RECORD FIRST QUARTER, FORECASTS ALL-TIME HIGH IN SALES AND EARNINGS FOR YEAR DALLAS, April 17--(Special)- -President J. E. Jonsson reported today that Texas Instruments Incorporated had just enjoyed the most successful first quarter in its history following an all-time high in sales and earnings for 1956. Speaking at the annual meeting of stockholders in the Company's main plant at Dallas, Mr. Jonsson predicted for all of 1957 record sales approximating $65,000, 000 and a new high in earnings of slightly better than $1. 00 per share of common stock. This would represent an increase in sales of more than 40% over last year. Sales for the first quarter of the current year totalled $15,252,000 and earnings per share of comrnon stock after preferred dividends amounted to 25i/, for the same period, Mr. Jonsson reported . .Present directors of the Company were re-elected by the stockholders who also voted approval of a stock option plan for the key employees of Texas Instruments and its subsidiary companies. Total number of shares of common stock to be subject to options under the plan approved by the stockholders is 15 0,000 and the options will terminate ten years from the plan 1 s effective date unless sooner terminated by the board of directors. In his remarks, Mr. Jonsson took cognizance of rumors recently circulated that Texas Instruments might be merged with another and larger corporation and declared emphatically that such rmnors were entirely without foundation in fact. Reviewing 1956 accomplishments, he reported consolidated sales had amounted to a record $45, 699, 358 compared to $28, 684,653 for 1955, an increase of approximately 60%. Net income for 1956, he said, increased from 1955 's $1, 581, 790, or 50,f. per share of common stock, to $2,349, 103, or 72,f. per share of common

stock after preferred dividends. This represented an increase of approximately 44%. Mr. Jonsson noted that the first quarter of 1957 had been marked by continuing expansion in all the Company's activities, accompanied by planning and preparation for future growth.

He reported that construction of the first

building on the Company's 300-acre Dallas site--a new 280,000 sq ft plant for the Semiconductor-Comp onents division--is on schedule with partial occupancy slated for the fall of 1957; that work is nearing completion on a 25,000 sq ft second-story addition to the main Dallas plant for engineering

E. Haggerty, Executive Vice President, announced today. "This not only will help us meet a steadily growing demand for silicon transistors but, additionally, will provide our customers and potential customers with a second source of supply, " according to Mark Shepherd, Jr., Vice President in charge of the Semiconductor Components division. "Our Houston plant, which manufactures such precision products as the Wor den gravity meter and complex seismograph equipment, possesses the special skills required for this new work, and we are most happy to make these skills available for producing the tiny transistor, " he said. Mr. Shepherd pointed out that the Industrial Instrumentation division's location in Houston--top market for precision seismograph equipment--means that additional skilled manpower of highest calibre can be drawn upon if required. Texas Instruments was the nation's first, and is the largest, producer of silicon transistors.

The company currently is manufac-

turing and marketing 36 different types. Manufacture of the transistors will not interfere with the Industrial Instrumentation division's schedule for producing its full line of seismic instruments and supplementary items, according to TI Vice President Robert W. Olson, in charge of that division. ''Our new plant, which we occupied only last October, provides us ample means for integrating this new activity without handicapping in any manner the production or delivery schedules on our regular lines," he said. "Further, we look forward to gaining valuable know-how regarding transistorization that will materially assist us in new design concepts for future industrial and exploration instrumentation. "

Trent, a recognized authority on electronic circuits development, has joined Texas Instruments Incorporated to direct a newly-formed engineering branch for applications and test equipment in the Semiconductor -Components division, Mark Shepherd, Jr. , Vice President, announced today . His title will be Head, Circuit Development Branch. The scope of activities of the new engineering branch will include basic circuit research, studies of non-linear switching circuits , characteristic s of power output devices, . and high frequency applications . Mr. Trent was a member of the technical staff of Bell Laboratories, Incorporated, at Murray Hill, N. J. , for sixteen years.

In this capacity,

he had broad experience in device, systems and circuit design and worked on transistors and transistor applications since 1950 . Born March Zl, 1919, in New York City, Mr. Trent received his professional education at Columbia University School of Engineering where he received both his bachelor and master degrees in electrical engineering . He is a member of Eta Kappa Nu, professional engineering society , a senior member of the Institute of Radio Engineers, and a member of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers . (more)

TEXAS INSTRUMENTS S-C DIVISION MARKETING OFFICES MOVE FROM MAIN PLANT TO NEW EL DORADO BUILDING DALLAS, May 4 -- (Special) -- Marketing department offices of the Semiconductor-Compo nents division of Texas Instruments Incorporated will be open for business in new quarters at 2929 Cedar Springs Road on Monday morning, May 6, it was announced today by Mark Shepherd, Jr., Vice PresidenL The department will occupy approximately 6,000 sq ft of floor space in the recently-completed El Dorado Building at the Cedar Springs address and the move will be made over the week end without interruption of service to customers, Mr. Shepherd said. The new offices will house a staff of 76 persons and will be equipped with five 24-hour teletype machines for instant communication with the division's other marketing offices in all sections of the country. Marketing department offices of the division are being moved from the main Texas Instruments plant at 6000 Lemmon Avenue. Rapidly expanding sales of the Semiconductor-Comp onents division's products, additions to the product line and expansion of staff made acquisition of larger marketing quarters imperative, even before completion of the division 1 s new plant now under construction on North Central Expressway in Dallas, Mr. Shepherd said. General Volcansek, holder of three of the top service awards for valor, has been notified of his selection to receive the ''Useful Citizen" citation during the St. Paul, Minn., college's annual Alumni Day program. Presentation will be made by Macalester President Charles J. Turck. After graduating from Macalester, Gen. Volcansek enlisted in the Marine Corps, became a Marine fighter pilot in World War II and commanded fighter squadrons attacking Bougainville and Rabaul. Upon retiring from the Marine Corps, Gen. Volcansek joined Texas Instruments in December, 1956, as senior administrative engineer in the Apparatus division. Gen. Attainment of this significant milestone in the rapidly developing transistor field was announced simultaneously at the Texas Instruments main plant here and by TI Vice President Mark Shepherd, Jr. at the National Conference on Aeronautical Electronics in Dayton, Ohio. The new silicon transistor is produced by a gaseous diffused-juncti on process similar in basic principles to the process announced in January 1956 by Bell Telephone Laboratories. The power handling ability of the new silicon transistor represents at least a four-fold increase at room temperature.

Military Relations Engineer for the Semiconductor -Components division of Texas Instruments Incorporated and his assignment to a new office opened at Dayton, Ohio, was announced today by Earl Trantham, S-C division Military Relations Manager. Mr. Karagianis will function in a liaison capacity between Defense

Department engineers and Texas Instruments management and engineering and marketing personnel on matters of requirement, development and procurement.

His office will be at 11 West Monument Building, Dayton.

Before coming to Texas Instruments, Mr. Karagianis was a project engineer in the Weapons Guidance Laboratory of Wright Air Development C~nter at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base at Dayton.

In that capacity

he was engaged in the design and development of bombing and navigation systems and mission guidance equipment for tactical aircraft. Previously, he served as a first lieutenant in the United States Air Force 4S a design and development project officer. Mr. Karagianis is a native of Pennsylvania and lived in Ambridge, Pa., before moving to Dayton in 1951.

He was graduated from the University of

TEXAS INSTRUMENTS FLIES "seisMAC" TO PARIS -"ELECTRONIC B RAIN WITH A DEGREE IN GEOPHYSICS" HOUSTON, May 25 - -(Special)- -To make more effective the intensive search for petroleum in oil-hungry Europe, a "seisMAC, 11 the "electronic orain with a degree in geophysics, 11 has been flown to Paris, it was announced today by R. W. Olson, Vice President of Texas Instrument s Incorporated Industrial Instrumentation division. The consignment, w h ich include d "seisMAC" and other g eophysical equipment manufactured by t h e TI Ind ustrial Instrumentation division, consisted of 22 boxes with a total wei ght of nearly 6, 000 pounds and a value of approximately $185,000.

It was purchased by Seismos G. M. B. H., a German geophysical company, for use by its wholly-owned subsidiary, the Societe Seismique Gravimetrie with headquarters at 79 Champe Elysees, Paris. The equipment was flown to Paris from New York by KLM Royal Dutch Airlines after being brought from Houston to New York by Slick Airways. This
