TRANSISTORIZED LAND MINE DETECTOR WITH IMPROVED SENSITIVITY DEVELOPED FOR U. S. ARMY BY TEXAS INSTRUMENTS INCORPORATED DALLAS, January 6 --(Special)--Texas Instruments Incorporated has developed a new light-weight transistorized land mine detector for the U. S. Army with greatly increased ::; eneitivity and other advantages over detectors currently in use, it was announced today by W. F. Joyce, TI Vice President in charge of the Apparatus division. Because it is transistorized, the new detector has a much longer battery life and enhanced reliability under rugged field conditions of use, it was pointed out. Use of transistors also has permitted miniaturization of the device to the point where all parts except the antenna can be carried under the operator's clothing. This is considered of special importan'-=e where the detector is to be used in Arctic regions. The detector also is fungus proof for advantageous use in the tropics. Texas Instruments worked with the Engineering Development Laboratories, Corps of Engineers, Fort Belvoir, Va., in developing the transistorized land mine.

These would compare with 1957 net sales of approximately $67 million and earnings slightly over $1. 10 per share of common stock. Addressing the analysts group in a luncheon meeting at the Fairmont Hotel, Mr. Jonsson said 1957 h1d brought sales increases for all major phases of the company's activities. At year -end, he said: Exploration activity was at an all-time high for Geophysical Service Inc. and Tl's other geophysical subsidiaries, with 71 crews active in 17 countries of the free world. These advantages are achieved by completely dry construction ( no liquid or paste is used) and the chemical stability of tantalum and its oxides. The capacity of the unit is inversely proportional to the film thickness, whereas working voltage is directly related to film thickness. Thereafter, conducting coatings of graphite and copper, which form the cathode, are applied to the pellet in order to form a good conducting bond to the case.

He cited as examples the successful transistorization of telemetering, infrared detection and mapping, and missile guidance systems. Other systems which have been or are being completely transistorized include those used in aircraft instrumentation, radar, sonar, intercommunication, magnetic airborne detection, attack navigation, and computers. Semiconductor devices have been used even in land mine detectors for the ground forces, he said, with resultant reduction in size and weight and increased sensitivity. TI has developed extremely compact telemetering transmitters in special units to 200 watts output in a 3 x 4 x 5-inch package. TI also has developed telemetering units with transistorized keyers, choppers, signal processors and other subassemblies. Transistors are replacing vacuum tubes in infrared detection and mapping systems, giving low level signal amplification with a reduction in weight, volume and power r.equirements, Mr. Wissemann pointed out.

Mr. McDermott will slide the cover from a solar convertor, energizing a relay that will amplify solar energy to form a spark gap severing the traditional opening ribbon. Mr. Ralph B. Rogers, chairman of the execut ive committee of St. Mark's, will accept the keys to the building that is considered to be one of the finest science facilities in the Southwest. The main speaker for the dedication ceremony will be Dr. Claude Albr itton, Jr., Dean of the Graduate School of Southern Methodist University. The one-story brick building, constructed entirely of fire-proof and fire resistive materials, contains chemistry, biology and drafting labora tories, lecture and projection room, instructor's office and lobby. DALLAS, April 22--(Special)-- Capabilities and facilities of Texas Instruments, an important supplier of complex electronic systems for the nation's defenses, will be reviewed Wednesday by a high-ranking team of students from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces. Representing the Army, Navy, Air Force, Department of Defense and Department of State, the seventeen officers and civilians will spend the afternoon inspecting TI's main plant at 6000 Lemmon Avenue and new semiconductor plant at 13500 North Central Expressway and in conference with company executives and managers in the fields of research, engineering and manufacturing. W.F. Joyce, TI Vice President in charge of the Apparatus division, will be host to the team. The Apparatus division is engaged primarily in designing, dev~loping and manufacturing advanced electronics weapons and weapon systems, including co~ponents for guided missiles, for the armed forces. In scope, the studies of the Industrial College of the Armed Forces stress international aspe~ts as well as intensive treatment of national problems. 1"'hroughout the courses emphasis is placed on new problems in the economic aspects of national security imposed by the threat of nuclear attack.
