Installation of 120 Seismograph Stations>:c -- TI engineers are installing standard modern instrumentation, checking out equipment, and training local operator personnel at 120 seismographic observatories around the world under a U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey contract. The stations are largely existing local government facilities and university observatories. Worldwide Earthquake Data Study>:c -- Records from seismographic ob­ servatories around the world are being collected and analyzed in a project to study the earth's seismicity and to determine in particular the prevalence of small, local earthquakes. Machine processing includes spectral analysis and correlation of data from many stations for epicentral determination and statistical studies. Purpose is to aid the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey in standardizing worldwide seismograph stations. Geophysics Research Directorate, AFCRL, is sponsoring agency. Recording Nuclear Tests>!c -- Seismic field units, equipped with advanced instrumentation and placed at various distances and azimuths from the shots, record signals from specified underground nuclear test explosions such as Pro­ ject GNOME for subsequent data analysis. AFT AC is sponsoring agency. Nuclear Test Site Soil Analysis>:c -- Geochemistry and geonuclear specialists collect soil and soil gas samples and gamma radiation data at sites of past under­ ground nuclear explosions for laboratory analysis and reduction of data. This work is part of the nuclear surveillance on-site inspection program. Air Force Office of Scientific Research is the sponsoring agency. Seismological Observatories Network>!< -- TI has prime responsibility for construction and operation of seismological observatories near Baker, Ore. ; Vernal, Utah, and McMinnville, Tenn. Part of TI' s task is to collect data using these facilities and to upgrade the detection and identification capabilities of the observatories both operationally and technologically. A related contract covers construction of buildings, roads, and installation of utilities for these observa­ tories. Magnetometer Stations Network -- Using TI metastable helium magnetometers, the company's crews are monitoring and recording extremely low frequency geo­ magnetic signals on a 24-hour s -a-day basis at several stations outside the con­ tinental United States. Time reference is recorded concurrently with the mag­ netometric data to provide for the location of specific events of interest and the cross-correlation of records. Data is delivered to the U.S. Army Signal Research and Development Laboratory, Fort Monmouth, N. J. Sensors for Airborne Terrain Analysis -- Under the SAT AN program (Sensors for Airborne Terrain Analysis}, radar, infrared, aerial photography, scintillation counters and other sensing systems were evaluated for potential in­ stallation in aircraft to carry out terrain analysis missions. Military Terrain Quantification -- Objective and quantitative techniques are being developed to de scribe and classify such terrain characteristics as surface geometry, strength and composition; vegetation; hydrography; cultural factors; and climatic effects specifically to meet military requirements. Seismic Communications Studies -- This contract involved fundamental research on elastic wave propagation and was particularly concerned with the evaluation of certain seismic boundary waves for their use in transferring in­ formation.
